<image:caption>The Sign “Have they not then looked at the sky above them: how We built it and adorned it with stars, leaving it flawless?” (Qur’an 50:6). The Islamic perspective on proving the existence of God has been to look around us as there are numerous signs for those who want to see them. For me personally the night sky is always a reminder of God. “Beauty will save the world” (Dostoevsky). I find meaning and beauty in the night sky. I think that we live in the ingratitude of the beauty around us. If we just stop and look even a little beyond our own selfish obsessions of life, we will find beauty too mesmerizing to comprehend. Witnessing that level of beauty is truly a spiritual experience. — Ahmad</image:caption>

<image:caption>Communicating IFPV’s Work Engaging in interfaith as an academic discipline directly impacts the applied communications side of interfaith work. We took what we were studying and made it engaging to our public audience on all of our social media platforms, trying to make content accessible and relevant to everyone, regardless of academic background or religious tradition. We did this by highlighting recent religion news and sharing how interfaith engagement has impacted real people who have been involved with our organization and others. Through our communications work, we learned that participating in social media dialogue requires an extra amount of care and thought due to the clear distance between posts and those who view them. When addressing sensitive issues, like religious persecution or doctrinal disagreements, we use the same etiquette and respect established in Interfaith Photovoice meetings to further welcome different worldviews and cultures, even within something as seemingly simple as sharing a news link. We seek to understand, recognize the identities and beliefs of every person involved, and tell the stories from the perspective of the persons the story concerns. The words we use matter, and they especially matter when we are trying to communicate complex ideas to people with different beliefs or life experiences; the words we use matter so that sharing the stories of interfaith today can be meaningful for everyone.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A typical Interfaith Photovoice project consists of a group of individuals with different religious identities. Although the members of our photovoice project all identified with the Christian tradition in some way, we represented multiple different denominations and had experienced faith in different ways. One of us noted: “We have learned more about each other in just these ten hours of photovoice meetings than I learned about my coworkers I worked with all summer.” Discussing things like faith in everyday life and our challenges to living out faith invited us to practice a level of vulnerability and trust with one another which helped us to develop deeper relationships.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog Archives - Interfaith Photovoice Through the Lenses of Our Interns - Photo 4. In the final photovoice project meeting, interns discuss the themes of photos that most consistently showed up as a group throughout the whole project.</image:title>
<image:caption>This mutual vulnerability we experienced during our photovoice sessions struck us as especially powerful because it is not something we have often encountered in faith-based settings. For some, church is a place to gather and worship but not necessarily a place to express struggles and doubts. It seems that, while Interfaith Photovoice focuses on building relationships across different religions, photovoice could be just as powerful within religious traditions. Photovoice gave us insight into how quickly vulnerability makes community grow—branching across gaps and differences in experience to create a space that feels therapeutic and safe. The relationships that emerge from photovoice provide a basis for enacting institutional change by equipping participants with the tools they need to engage with one another in a constructive and compassionate manner. These tools are valuable in any context—from workplaces to religious institutions to personal relationships.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Photo 1. Commentary on this drawing from Roberta, a study participant: “I guess I kind of interpreted it as being sort of at peace and being relaxed and able to reflect, so I had myself sort of lying in the field, and lying down, and my hands up behind my head, and I’m just kind of looking up hopefully with a sort of a contemplative look on my face. And it’s nice out. A little cloudy, but sunny. And that's kind of how I interpreted it. . . Maybe contemplating, and I don’t know if I used it when I was describing, but also being more self-aware and able to reflect on things that are meaningful to me.” —Roberta S., 64, Boston (Religious, Not Spiritual).</image:caption>

<image:caption>The participants are fully aware that there are differences between the religious practices, objects and beliefs of Muslims and Christians but in the individual interviews all of them spoke to Holtmann about how through the \Fredericton IFPV project they learned that they hold much in common. In the interviews, several of the participants spoke about how the photovoice process shed light on the shared struggles that Muslim and Christian women encounter in public when clothing symbolises their religious commitments. For the Muslim women, all of whom wear the hijab, they learned that some Pentecostal women from Fredericton choose to wear long skirts and not cut their hair for reasons of faith and that they face discrimination for these choices. I’ve heard like negative comments and stuff. And even like, I’m the only one in my family who’s Pentecostal and I’ve, even people in my life have said stuff about Pentecostals like, “They don’t, they don’t look that flattering” just because of what they wear. And I’ve heard other people say stuff or they’ll identify them as like, the Holy Rollers or something like that, make jokes like that. (Brandon) Some woman [at the exhibition] like she said to me, “We [Pentecostals] have to wear a long dress until here and cover all the body, but she didn’t like wear a hijab they just do it like … [Holtmann: Put their hair up?] Yes. That’s new for me. (Abeer)</image:caption>

<image:caption>Salsabel describes the IFPV participants as ‘all happy together’ as a result of discussing the challenges and opportunities that arose for them as Christian and Muslim students, including the Muslim women’s choice to wear the hijab. Her interaction with people who attended the opening of the IFPV exhibition at the university art gallery provided her with further proof that other non-Muslims are interested in her experiences and identity. Knowing that the Christian students and other non-Muslims want to better understand her provided a boost to Salsabel’s self confidence and helped her to feel more comfortable. Institutions and Gender In applying a deep equality and intersectional feminist lens to our data, we find differences between how the men and women in our project situate their religious identities relative to secular institutions. For example, male participants tend to express frustration with the lack of religious representation in secular institutions such as universities and government, as well as the reputation of religious institutions in the media. Female participants, on the other hand, while sharing these frustrations, tend to frame them as opportunities to embody and create space as a person of faith in secular or non-religious space (as highlighted in the section on religious and symbolic clothing). Additionally, female participants differ from male participants in their focus on both ideological and pragmatic challenges, such as overpriced halal meat (Figure 11) and the lack of adequate recycling services in Fredericton.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In a vivid visual example of these gender differences between the two Christian participants, both Brandon and Emma created images of the same building (the provincial Legislative Assembly), but from different angles – in a literal and ideological sense. Brandon uses his image (Figure 12) to highlight his concern over the federal government’s addition to the student summer job grant that requires organisations to agree that they support women’s reproductive rights and freedom from discrimination (including gender identity and sexual orientation) in order to receive funding (Connolly 2018). He feels that this change is unfair to some Christian communities that may oppose those policies on moral grounds and could signify an erosion of religious freedom that these communities feel compelled to oppose. The female Christian participant Emma, on the other hand, submitted an image that she had taken of protestors outside of the Legislative Assembly (Figure 13) during the Fredericton Women’s March, which was conducted in solidarity with the Women’s March in Washington, DC, following Donald Trump’s inauguration as President of the United States. Key issues for the March were defending reproductive and civil rights, including those based on gender identity and sexual orientation (Hartocollis and Alcindor 2017). Emma used her image to highlight her solidarity with these causes as a Christian. While Brandon and Emma problematise their relationship with the government, Brandon saw friction between the government and his faith community as detrimental to religious freedom, whereas Emma labelled creating friction as an act of faith.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Discussion The goals of the broader Interfaith Photovoice Initiative include bridging cultural divides, encouraging mutual advocacy, and engaging communities around questions of faith and religious diversity. We discuss the findings of the analysis of visual and interview data from the six university students of the Fredericton IFPV project in light of these goals as they relate to the participants’ concerns regarding barriers to religious freedom and gender equality. Given the small sample size, we are unable to generalise these findings to include the experiences of all Christian and Muslim university students at UNB or other secular universities in Canada. Nevertheless, the findings can be useful for university faculty, staff, administrators, and campus ministers who work with members of these groups.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog Archives - Sharing that Cultivates Love - Photo 2. “It is when we do not know and do not want to know that we become like this tree, scared frozen. When we choose to not know and learn the needs of others, we actually isolate ourselves from knowing and befriending those around us, and the needs of others are not met properly. Lack of understanding creates division, distrust, and enmity between groups and people. Even in our fear, maybe there is a monkey sitting on our shoulder, putting his hand on our head, giving us the compassion and courage to understand. Understanding others takes effort and sacrifice, but I believe it is worth it because it fosters love, compassion, and unity” (Jessica). Jessica wrote these reflections once the project was finished including the new perspective a fellow participant offered.</image:title>
<image:caption>In addition, a number of people made comments to me in response to some of my more vulnerable sharing which encouraged me greatly. One person just affirmed the difficulty of the experience I had shared. This person actually paused while she responded to me, and even that silence with another human being looking at me trying to find the words to respond to what I shared was a healing moment for me, even though I had never known this person before. While she looked at me for that moment I could see her trying to process my experience, lingering on my words, her eyes looking at me ever so slightly. I could feel that what I said impacted her and wondered if part of her understood my experience in her own way. Another person acknowledged sharing similar feelings to me. I felt not only seen and validated but also encouraged and empowered to do something in response to my difficult situation.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog Archives - What Photos Do - Photo 2. “Many and various ways to connect to the source of power—and to each other” (Carol).</image:title>
<image:caption>Photographs have a wide range of utility in structured interfaith interactions such as photovoice. Photos help participants start and sustain conversations. They act as an additional form of information that help people to understand unfamiliar objects, activities, and ideas. When someone introduces an image into a conversation, it informs the boundaries of a conversation by helping participants to see what is ‘fair game’ on the basis of what is represented in the frame of the photograph. Differences come into view. As people look intently into other people’s photos, they begin to see aspects of religion in everyday life that may otherwise be overlooked. As the saying attributed to Henri Bergson goes, “The eye only sees what the mind is prepared to comprehend.” While many photographs highlight differences between religious traditions, they also can underscore the ways in which their beliefs overlap, rhyme, and resonate. Likewise, conversations about photos can also lead to the recognition that participants possess a common set of concerns arising from the human condition and experience. To varying degrees a shared sense of purpose bubbles to the surface. Solidarities result. In these ways, photographs are helpful to the photovoice process of learning about the experiences, challenges, and aspirations of people from different religious backgrounds.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Once Michelle had a few good photos, the group appeared to be deeply invested in reaching a consensus about which one to use. Israa used our portable photo printer to create a copy of the image that could be posted on the wall. Once on the wall with other images, the hands photo resonated with everyone else in the room even though it was proposed without a title or caption.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog Archives - Shared Narratives - Photo 5. Participants taking a photo of their original idea to depict unity.</image:title>
<image:caption>Even though Richmond participants knew the story behind the photograph—indeed, they were the story of the photo—the picture still needed a title and caption for the exhibition. Just as the photo was a collaboration, so were the words that helped to tell its story to a broader audience. Aptly titled “Unity” the group chose passages from the last sermon of the Prophet Mohammed and the Apostle Paul: All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over black nor a black has any superiority over white. (Prophet Muhammad, PBUH) There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one . . . . (The Apostle Paul) Not only do these passages anchor the image in deeper meanings, they also represent an important discovery. Just as Muslims and Christians could embrace one another and pursue a goal of unity, their teachings also support this possibility. Not only did Israa, Khalil, Fatima, Olivia, Jessica, and Greg understand what Michelle was trying to do, their collective effort offers evidence for what photovoice may accomplish. Six weeks earlier these young adults did not know one another; by the end of the project they made a collective gesture of solidarity.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog Archives - Finding Common Ground - Photo 1. Unity is Power.</image:title>
<image:caption>I always try to share my knowledge with the people around me, so I shared my experience of interfaith photovoice with my community. I have seen a curiosity in different people to learn even more about photovoice and the magic it plays in understanding others. I believe that photovoice can be helpful not only in Pakistan but in any country because it gives everyone involved more than one can expect. Photovoice does not require us to come with a special skill but welcomes us as we are because it is a kind of activity that just needs a camera and does not demand any special skills and tools. Through the process, we learn all we need and grow together as a group. We capture photos to explain our thoughts and beliefs. It gives one much space to think, decide, and capture anything, encouraging us to be creative in the process. Being a Christian, I have always been concerned with my religious values primarily and never thought much of others’ beliefs; since I joined Interfaith Photovoice, I started knowing other faiths. I found that all participants focused on an undivided point: there must be hope for a peaceful society. The core values of every religion were reflected as peace, acceptance, brotherhood, love and harmony. It was an immense pleasure, as well as a surprise, to find that all religions speak similar values. I found that participants from all faiths were ready to serve humanity. All our different ways of serving and all the diversified ideas in photos converged to one single point: peace building. All of us were fed up with hate, revenge, and hypocrisy. We all are in need of a peaceful co-existence.</image:caption>

It is as though she was saying, “I’m comfortable talking about this topic and you can ask me more-or-less what you want as long as it is relevant to my photograph.” Through their photographs, photovoice participants grant permission to one another to have certain kinds of conversations by using the frame of a photograph to limit the kinds of personal information one discloses.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Laughter is indeed a positive foundation for interfaith understanding and relationships. Sharing photos and stories about religion in the midst of ordinary aspects of daily life—in food, exercise, children, community service, etc.—help people feel comfortable sharing. <image:title>Blog Archives - Connecting Through Photos - Photo 2. Participants in Richmond, Virginia, laughing as they compose a photograph together.</image:title>
<image:caption>Activity 3 | Who are you? For your work to be effective, you need to learn about the other people in your group and become comfortable using photographs as a way to share stories with one another. To do this, compose a few snapshots you can use to introduce yourself to the other people in your group. (Note: you may want to combine this activity with Activity 2.) Think about the people, places, objects, activities, and ideas that help to define who you are. Compose five photos you would feel comfortable using to introduce yourself. You may want to include one photograph for each category listed above or you may want to focus on a couple of these. Feel free to compose new photos and to select photos already on your camera roll—it is entirely up to you. During your next interfaith photovoice group meeting, be prepared to share your photos and tell the stories behind them. This can happen by showing the photo on your smartphone, tablet, or computer. Some people find it helpful to create a slideshow with their photos. If you create a slideshow it doesn’t need to be anything fancy: just the photos, no words necessary. There is also value in printing the photos and passing them around as you tell the story behind each one. As you progress from person to person in your group, be curious about one another. Ask questions. Look for the ways you are similar and different. And consider the ways religion shows up in these photos and stories; also note the ways it is absent.</image:caption>
